To improve water with problems other than hard water, various types of material are put into what are called media tanks.  The material in the tank is called “media”.  Water is directed through the media, which then filters out the problems from the water.  When filtering problems from water, it’s a matter of putting the correct type of media into tanks in order to remove the problem.

Below are various types of media we use to filter the most common problems.  While this is a partial list of media's available, there are certainly many other media's available for specialized problems..
Iron and Manganese Removal

Filox is a type of media used to remove iron and manganese problems from water supplies.  Filox filters can be installed in front of existing softeners that are having problems removing iron or they can be used as stand alone units
.
The filox will slowly dissolve away over time, so filox material must be added to the system every few years.  Beyond that, there’s nothing else to do.  No salt, no preventative maintenance, just periodic back flushing is needed.  Back flushing is totally automatic, so there’s really nothing to do but let the birm clean the water.

Filox cannot be used to remove “sulfur smell” from the water.  In fact, it cannot be used when sulfur smell is present.  KDF material, which is described below, must be used instead.

Chlorine, odor and taste removal

For eliminating or reducing chlorine and taste problems, carbon material is used because it is a highly effective and relatively inexpensive method of doing so.  Certain herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals are reduced with carbon material as well. A special type of carbon, catalytic carbon, can be used for mild to moderate sulfur or “rotten egg” smells found in problem wells.

Basic water-in water-out tanks filled with carbon (in-out tanks) are used frequently because there is no electricity required, no back flushing, no waste water and no timer necessary.  The carbon tank eventually has to have the old carbon removed and new carbon added.

Electric or non-electric Kinetico back flushing systems are also available for use in more challenging water situations.  Your Blue Fountain Water representative will be glad to discuss with you which method is best for your particular situation.

“Rotten egg” sulfur smell, iron and manganese removal

KDF is one of the best media’s we’ve ever found for removing a long list of problems from water supplies.  Not only can it very effectively take care of sulfur smells, but it is also used to remove iron and manganese at the same time.  Unlike birm material, which filters just iron and manganese, KDF has no problem removing all three.

Additionally, KDF reduces heavy metals such as: iron, lead, mercury, chromium, arsenic, selenium, copper, etc.  When used in chlorinated water, it removes up to 10 times more chlorine than carbon filters.  A KDF filter followed by a carbon filter is a very effective way to remove numerous water problems.

No salt, no chemicals, and no additives are necessary when using KDF.  It automatically cleans itself once a day for 15 minutes by back flushing collected material out of the system.

Use KDF to treat water before it enters your water softener, or in situations where water softening isn’t required.  It’s able to work in moderate to strong sulfur problems, as well as fairly heavy iron problems.

There is virtually no maintenance required with KDF, but certain water conditions have to be present for KDF to work properly.

Sulfur Guard by Kinetico is used when there is a “worse case” sulfur smell problem.  It is the single best product we have for removing smell problems when nothing else will.

Sulfur Guard has to have iron free, soft water feeding it to work properly.  Once installed, it regenerates itself using either regular household bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

Like all Kinetico whole house filters, it operates with no-electricity, has twin tanks for unlimited, uninterrupted treated water and will work in certain water conditions that KDF can’t operate in.

Your Blue Fountain Water representative will gladly help you decide the best option for your particular water conditions when you contact us.
